The cold war was a war that began on August 14th, 1945 and ended on December 26th, 1991. It was the United States vs. The Soviet Union. Their relationship began to unravel when the United States announced that they wanted to stop the spread of Communism. The two countries already did not trust each other, because the Soviet Union and The United States were both in a race to create the first nuclear bomb.On July 17th, 1945, U.S President Harry Truman, Soviet leader Joseph Stalin and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill met at Postdam, Berlin to discuss issues relating to postwar Europe and dealing with ongoing conflict with Japan. The Potsdam conference is considered to be one of WWII’s last conferences. The United States and the Soviet Union each had their own postwar goals. The United States wanted to encourage other countries to stop the spread of communism, rebuild the European governments, reunite Germany to stabilize it and increase security in Europe. The Soviet Union wanted to rebuild its economy that was destroyed by the war using Eastern Europe’s industrial equipment and raw materials, control Eastern Europe to protect soviet borders. They also wanted to keep Germany divided to prevent from waging wars and spread communism in other countries. Communism has many controlling characteristics. The government of the communistic country had control of the labor and education. The government also had complete ownership of factories and agricultures and had the power to heavily tax the citizens. They could take away your private property at anytime. On the other hand, in a capitalistic country you had the right to own your own business. You also had the rights to own private property and the choice of where to work and where to spend your own money at. In a capitalistic country they realized that the government should not have complete power, so they gave the government “limited power”. Capitalists understood that the world was advancing, they realized the importance of capital goods and technology.
The Soviet’s western border was proven weak. The Soviet’s leader Joseph Stalin, wanted a buffer zone to cover the whole western border. The whole ideal of the buffer zone was to slow down whoever was trying to attack him, before it got to him. The U.S was not happy with the Soviet Union and them trying to spread communism, whatsoever. The containment was how the United States were dealing with the Soviet Union. The containment was the police blocking the Soviet Union and the spread of communism. The U.S supported any countries that rejected the spread of communism. They provided four-hundred million dollars in aid to Turkey and Greece, just for rejecting communism in their countries.
